Felices Dias de Vacaciones,

We spent the last two weeks studying food vocabulary and finished with a unit on Las Posadas in Mexico.

Spanish 1-2 has been using the present tense in order to discuss what we eat and drink.   When we return we will be using the present tense in order to discuss what we do at school on a regular basis in various different classes.

Spanish 3-4 has been using usted commands talking about food and food preparation.  When we return we will be using these commands to tell people what to do in order to do well in the kitchen and at school.

Spanish 5-6 has been using the subjunctive tense in order to express hopes, desires and opinions about what people eat.  When we return we will be using the subjunctive in order to offer suggestions about diet and health.

Happy Holidays!!!

We will begin presenting our Bolsa Cafe projects this friday the 13th.
Students were given the rubric last week.
They should be gathering meaningful objects that they can put in their bags.
These objects will be prompts for them to move forward with their presentation.
They will not be able to use any notes.  They will be talking about themselves, what they are like and what they like to do.  Connections should be made between descriptive words and likes and dislikes.
Students will repeat with regard to someone or something else.

3 de octubre 2015

Students have been presenting their Libros Abecedarios over the last week.  We have seen and heard some superb, entertaining, artistic and creative work.  We will display some of this work at our upcoming Open House on 8 october.

We have also been learning the spanish alphabet as well as the phonemes associated with different letters and letter combinations.

We will begin cracking down with a bit more studying as we roll in to october.  Students are responsible for identifying and knowing the spanish speaking countries as well as capitals.  The QUIZLET site is a great way to study the capitals and there are other sites that have fun ways to study the maps.

Students will be given their next project at the end of this week.  The BOLSA CAFE project involves a two minute introductory presentation in which students use props which they take from a decorated bag in order to talk about themselves.  We will be working on the project for two weeks and will begin presentations on october 23.

The first week of school was indeed a hot one.
Hizo calor no?

We passed the first four days learning about some of our favorite animals, where they live, what they eat, what they do and also what they do not do.

Our TPR activities allowed students to become climbing monkeys, reaching giraffes, hunting tigers tortugas que nadan y mucho mas.

Students will bring their single subject notebook on monday and we will begin our daily routine of doing warm ups at the beginning of class while maintaining their cuaderno in a way that allows them to use it effectively in class and at home while working on projects.

The students' first project will be a  Libro Abecedario in which they create a themed ABC book.  The amount of language used will vary depending on class level, with our 5-6 class using a great deal more Spanish than those in 1-2.

Beinvenidos!
Welcome to the new school year of 2015-2016 at Colegio Point Loma.

This year I will be teaching three sections of Spanish 1-2 and one section each of Spanish 3-4 and Spanish 5-6.

We begin this year with a week of speaking, hearing, writing, thinking, singing, chanting, dancing, moving and understanding only using the Castellano language.  Do not be alarmed that I use the term Castellano, because I grew up speaking the Spanish of the Mexican nature in school and I know all the coolest slang Mexicanismos.  Most of the Spanish speaking world uses the term Castellano and differ by the use of the informal. plural, vosotros verb forms as well as other variations in word choice.  In many countries the midday meal is el almuerzo while in the formerly Mexican state of California it is commonly called el lonche.  Students will be immersed in the Spanish language and will quickly be comfortable using their limited Spanish.  Second and third year students will also be blabbing like telenovela stars in Spanish.

I will use English occasionally in the first and second year classes in order to explain concepts and ideas quickly.  Most of our class time, students will be immersed in the language and will be asked for that hour of the day to speak only in Spanish.

I will be pushing students this year to make the choice to use the language as much as possible both in and out of the classroom.  Our large freshman class, as well as sophomores and juniors, should strive to take four years of the language with the goal of taking the AP Language and/or Literature course in order to receive college credits while still in High School.  For many reasons which we will review in class next week, Spanish is a super handy language to know and use.  It provides students the opportunity to communicate with a larger portion of our world, it gives them an advantage in the workplace over the monolingual population, and study have shown that acquiring and using more than one language improves ones ability to think and learn more.

The syllabus for all three classes will be posted online at the end of this week for students and guardians to review.  I look forward to meeting our freshperson class.  I also anticipate reacquainting with returning second and third year students.

BILINGUISMO!  The language of our world.

Spanish 1-2

Students are working on their Guia Turistica which will be showing where to stay, eat, visit, what to wear and other atracciones turisticas in their Spanish cities.  The project will be due on 8 May and presentations will continue into the next week.  Students were given the rubric last week, were shown a few examples and are continuing to plug new ideas into their projects.  It is extra important that students do not use a translator when writing the text.  They are currently reading and writing at about a fourth grade level and their work should reflect this.

Spanish 5-6

Students are continuing to work on creating a non-profit organization that works to solve or alleviate a social issue.  Students are tackling animal cruelty, cancer, environment and other issues.  They will be creating a poster or other media device in order to advertise their cause, state their mission and show what they are doing in order to create change.

Spanish 1-2

We have been studying clothing, weather, seasons and the various verbs that change from E to IE.  We will be taking an exam el 22 de abril on Unidad 4 Leccion 1.  It will also test our ability to use direct object pronouns instead of the objects themselves.  We are way busy to say los pantalones cortos azules and would prefer to instead say los or them.
We will continue working on the Guia Turistico which will be due el ocho de mayo.  Students should be spending time at home finding information on their respective cities in Spain in order to provide useful information about dining, accommodations, weather and clothing, as well as transportation throughout the city.  Students should keep in mind that their guide should have a theme which is evident throughout.  Possibilities are numerous and might include sports, arts, theatre, film, cuisine, culture or other topic specific to their city.

Spanish 5-6

We are developing service organizations that address a societal or environmental need.  Students will be designing a logo along with activities in which their organization participates.  They will be creating activities for their organization in order to enact change or provide support for their cause. The nosotros commands will be used to encourage others to participate as well as the conditional tense which will say what would happen as a result of their actions as a group.

We are finishing this week our study of the family along with comparisons and dates and numbers from 100 - 1000.   We are taking the Unidad 3 Leccion 2 examen this week.  Next week we begin Unidad 4 in Avancemos as we study clothing, shopping, seasons, places in town and transportation. Spanish 5-6

We continue our extended study and practice of the subjunctive mood which is used to express opinion, doubt, hope and desire.  We are currently reading a story about Riley, a student who encounters problems common to high school students.  We are giving Riley suggestions about what he needs to do in order to alleviate his problems.  Our next project will be a skit in which students play the roles of students who have problems.   Their friends help them overcome these problems with sugerencias and advice using the subjunctive mood.  The rubric for the project will be placed in student hands next week.

We have begun Unidad 3 en Avancemos as the Salgado jersey continues its' tour around the Spanish -speaking world.  The shirt is now in Puerto Rico, a country I have not been to but would enjoy visiting.
This unit deals with food and verbs related to la comida.  The leccion also begins with conjugating ER and IR verbs and also how to use GUSTAR when talking about multiple things.
All students begin the semester with a perfect 0 score.  It is a great time to begin or keep maintaining that "A" grade.  Students took a quiz today on the food vocabulary and most students called it FACIL.
Students should be using Studyspanish.com in order to practice at home the grammar skills we are covering.  A regular ten  minutes at home can go a long way.
